“In terms of underlying techniques, ChatGPT is not that innovative,” said Yann LeCun, the Turing Award Winner and Chief AI Scientist at Meta, “OpenAI is not particularly an advance compared to the other labs, at all.” I could not agree with him more but as a matter of fact, ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly active users in just two months, making it the fastest growing consumer application in history. Predictably, this record will soon be broken, because as the global economy enters the second stage of digital-intelligence transformation, the growth of exponential organizations will become more and more common, and ChatGPT is just a tipping point for artificial intelligence to go from perceiving and understanding the world to generating and creating the world.
However, with the breakthroughs made in the applications of digital-intelligence scenarios to serve the global economy, we need to pay more attention to and be more vigilant against the trend that ChatGPT is igniting the first “crisis of abundance” in human history. That is why Musk called ChatGPT “scary good”, and warned us that “we are not far from dangerously strong AI” .
In his book titled Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think, Dr. Peter Diamandis presented rich and powerful evidence to show that four emerging forces—exponential technologies, the “DIY” innovator, the Technophilanthropist and the Rising Billion—are conspiring to solve our biggest challenge: providing abundance. But will the future, as the author says, be better than we imagine? It further depends on whether we are fully prepared for the first “crisis of abundance” in human history.
After all, ChatGPT passed a Google interview for a $183,000 engineering position. So how many industries and jobs will be quickly subverted and banned in the future? According to Windows Central, a foreign technology media, the new ChatGPT-4-integrated Bing is no longer just a search engine on the page, but a “research assistant, personal planner, and creative partner at your side” .
The Wall Street FinTech talents with a keen eye also realized that ChatGPT is now a “black box”, which means that artificial intelligence can give answers without the need to track its method, which naturally brings about a common regulatory crisis and wider concerns on data security.
As the first “crisis of abundance” in human history, representatives of the United Nations still focus on the digital divide brought about by ChatGPT in the traditional sense, largely due to the absence of a full and comprehensive understanding of human abundance. AI, represented by ChatGPT, can deliver exponential growth in the digital-intelligence transformation of the global economy. As a two-side sword, it narrows the cognitive gap to an extreme extent and at the same time, challenges us with new cognitive abundance of humanity.
In addition to the forward-looking description of various social sectors in the aforementioned book of Abundance, the Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) on how to get out of the current predicament of global central banks’ over-generosity in money creation is increasingly drawing mainstream attention, and the transition to the universal basic income proposal from dead-ended traditional welfare state policies are all positive attempts we have made in response to the “crisis of abundance”.
