| 摘要 | Digital books are usually sold as licenses, not as copies. The platform that sells them also sets the rules for derivative works built on them, such as audiobooks and other authorized adaptations. Producing these derivatives requires substantial, relationship-specific investment that is sunk before the product reaches the market. If the platform can change the contract after the work is done, as Amazon’s audiobook exchange has done, developers face a hold-up problem. Tokenized distribution governed by a DAO can be an alternative. We build a model of authorized derivative development in digital content markets in which the governance regime differs along three dimensions: whether buyers can resell, how credible are the terms, and who holds the authority to set them. Our paper has some interesting results. First, when a platform can revise the derivative fee after the developer has sunk investment, developers invest less even if the platform later lowers the fee. Second, resale value attached to the original can protect the original market. When consumers expect to recover value by reselling the original, they are less likely to replace it with the derivative. Third, a platform may refuse to enable resale even though it could collect fees on secondary transactions because secondary fees create revenue but resale value reduces what current buyers are willing to pay. |
