Research | From the “Ice Age” to “Golden Age” of Technology: Professor Zhao Jianliang (Leon) Publishes an Article Decoding the Paradigm Evolution of GenAI

Release time:25 March 2025

As a disruptive force that changes business landscapes and human life, AI is reshaping global business at an astonishing speed: AI is projected to contribute more than 15 trillion US dollars to the global economy by 2030. AI is the core engine of the digital economy and a strategic highland for major countries in global science and technology competition.

The technology has gone through decades of ups and downs: From the “Ice Age” of technology that relies on artificial rules to the “Golden Age” of machine learning spawned by the explosion of big data, leaps in computing power, and algorithmic revolution, now the new era of generative AI (GenAI) marked by ChatGPT has emerged. GenAI, based on large language models to realize the intelligent generation of creative content, such as text, images, and codes, while demonstrating amazing productivity, has exposed many real-life dilemmas. This phenomenon has triggered in-depth thinking on the boundaries of technology and social responsibility in academia and industry.

In this context, Professor Zhao Jianliang (Leon) from the School of Management and Economics (SME), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen), in collaboration with Professor Veda C. Storey from the Georgia State University, Professor Wei Thoo Yue from the City University of Hong Kong, and Professor Roman Lukyanenko from the University of Virginia, published their research online titled Generative Artificial Intelligence: Evolving Technology, Growing Societal Impact, and Opportunities for Information Systems Research in Information Systems Frontiers, a frontier journal in international information systems. The research proposes the concept of a “generative socio-technical system” and explores its impact on business and society in the context of information systems research. (Click here to view)
