Professor Zhang Wen majored in economics, but after four years of undergraduate education and exploration, she realized her strengths were in interpersonal communication, language expression, and team leadership. She turned to apply for the MSc programme in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at Guanghua School of Management of Peking University and received a postgraduate recommendation from the school. After graduating with a master’s degree, Professor Zhang went on to study for the doctoral programme in organization management at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

What are the differences between business schools at home and abroad in teaching environments and models? Professor Zhang believes that the teaching model for the management course is closely linked to professors’ teaching styles. Domestic education is more coordinated with national conditions while foreign class features more freedom, activity, and easier teacher-student interaction. Professor Zhang has absorbed the advantages and strengths of domestic and foreign teaching methods, closely integrated Western theories with Chinese realities, and taught more scientific and practical knowledge of management.

In her view, “Management can subtly change our way of thinking and habits of communication and facilitate the close integration between abstract theory and concrete practice, thereby helping us learn and live better.” In real life, there may be some inconsistencies between theory and practice, which requires a flexible solution. “Management is part of science, part of art.”

In the current era, Professor Zhang believes that management programmes have promising prospects of employment for excellent and all-around talents in management are welcome by every industry.
